Ryan made me these beautiful size 50 circular needles. They're a whopping one inch in diameter! He also plans to make 1 1/4 inch needles, which is going to be almost ridiculous but so, so awesome. Anyway, I cut up a t-shirt to make yarn to try on my new needles. I've also been experimenting with Lion Brand Thick and Quick held double, but I don't love any of the colors enough to make an afghan out of it. I wish I could afford this Big Stitch Alpaca Yarn. Anyone know of any ridiculously thick yarn that's affordable?
Would he consider making these for sale?
ReplyDeleteI know it's not the most affordable of yarns, but Baby Clouds Yarn (Red Heart, I think) would be gorgeous on these needles. You can often find it on sale, which makes it more affordable. I've done many baby blankets out of it, and it's incredibly soft and machine washable in beautiful colors. Your fingers will love how it feels while you're working with it, too.
Ryan says he'll make you some. I think I have some of that Baby Clouds in my stash. I'll have to give it a try. I didn't realize it was super bulky weight.
ReplyDeleteWow! And circular! How long is the cable? Can you imagine using the "magic loop" with those? Neat. What would your gauge be with Chunky (e.g. thick and quick) held double? You could whip through a sweater in no time. Having just finished a couple pairs of socks, one with fine fingering weight, I'm now enjoying the speed of size 10 1/2 (6 1/2 mm)on a mohair sweater. They seem huge compared to those zeros and ones I was using. I don't think I've ever heard of a size 50. What's the wood? It looks like oak? Please let me know how they work out.

ReplyDeleteJohn Paul, magic loop would be insane! Maybe I could make giant socks as Christmas stockings. I think my gauge with the thick and quick was about 2/3 inch per stitch. I was hoping for something even thicker, so I might try holding it triple or wait for the bigger needles. The wood is oak-it was the only hard wood dowel the hardware store had. I probably wouldn't like it on smaller needles because of all the grooves, but it works on these. It's just weird to feel texture on knitting needles because they are usually so smooth. The cable is about 4 feet long, but I haven't committed yet, so it's not glued in.
Those are incredible! Are they totally awkward to hold? You never cease to amaze me!
